Homework:Flat plan and rationale

Rational

I have designed my Flat plan for my double page spread to help me with my design. My plan includes two images because I thought the two images could show different things about my artist. I have decided that I will have quotes on things that seem interesting or important in the story so I can draw the audience in. I will use bright colours to attract people but will also be careful when using colour to try and get an effect like my inspirational texts. The fonts that I will use will be big and bold (but easy to read) because I felt that in my inspirational texts the writing  used was very small on the story but the right size in the title, so when designing my own double page spread I will try to solve this problem.                                                                                                     

 I would like to set my double page spread out with my text on the left and my image on the right would also like the title to take up half of the left page similar to the inspirational text on the Lillie Allen spread. The text will be set out in wide columns and will discuss Holly’s rise to fame and give tips to any up and coming artists.

Homework:inspirational double page spreads

I like this double page spread because it looks very eye catching. Lilly Allen is shown wearing red/tartan which immediately stands out because the rest of the double page spread is black and white, the image of lily Allen also takes up a full page. The title stands out lots because it is white on black; the letters are also all different sizes as each letter is  cut out, with every word standing out because it starts with a capital letter to show that what Lilly Allen says is important. The title takes up half the page which makes you think that there is not much writing and people would probably be more willing to read it if it looked like this. I also like the way that the writing is on the left hand side of the page I think that this is something I could include in my magazine because people automatically read from left to right.   

I like the fact that on this double page spread lady Gaga images is in black and white this looks very dramatic because it contrasts with the big red L through the text which immediately grabs the reader’s attention, I think that this is very effective and clever, it would also look good if the writing was in red and would probably make the it easier to read, however I do not like the way the text is shown because it looks like a huge amount and I personally would not want to read a massive amount of writing like that. I don’t think I will have my spread set out like this.

I like this double page spread for many reasons one being that the title USA is faded and Florence has her head in front of it this shows that she is the most important thing on the page and that the story is all about her. I also like the use of colour, the background and words are black and gray and even Florence’s clothes are black the only colour which really stands out is the red and white on the American flag and the red of Florence’s hair. There seems to be a lot of text which may put off some people, but this could be just with it being in long narrow columns and I think would be better if it had wider columns .

I like this double page spread because the image is very effective with Adela’s hair blowing across the words’ I think the use of black and white with red writing over the top works well and is very effective. I think that this double page spread lacks writing and in comparison to the others I have looked at it is very basic, but this is more like an introduction two page spread that is followed by the story. This shows that you can have close up images on your double page spread not just medium and long shots.

3-5 inspirational texts

I have been asked to pick 3-5 magazine covers that inspire me and write what I like about them, why I like them, what inspires me and what I would like to incorporate into my own work. I have decided to look at four different magazines. The magazines I have chosen are: Marie Clare, instyle, Reveal and More.

Marie Clare

Marie Clare looks to have a very sophisticated front cover, the page layout is very glamorous and classy and I believe that the look of the front cover is setting the tone for quality throughout the magazine. I love the use of warm pastel colours. The background is a beautiful blossom pink and the important writing is shown in contrasting colours which are: dark pink, black and white which is very effective and clear. As well as using these colours that stand out for the writing they also use different fonts and sizes that are unusual but easy to read. I also like the circle on the front cover and think that by using this, the magazine becomes more eye-catching; I would like to incorporate the use of shapes into my work because they really draw the eye to them and get the message across.                                                                                                                                                  

  On the front cover there is a beautiful picture of Kiera knightly using a chocolate box pose, she is wearing white which I think is very clever because the Masthead saying Marie Clare is also white and the white stands out against the pink background of the cover . I would like to incorporate the clean look in my work because Marie Clare shows that if you use space and colour well your front cover can look clean and uncluttered but still have everything you need to attract people into wanting to read it.

Instyle

I think that instyle is quite similar to Marie Clare because it has quite a grown up look and is very plain but classy and attractive. One of the main things I like about instyle is that they haven’t used too many colours. The background is white and the writing is black, the masthead is on a gold sequin banner and the words instyle are white which stands out very well especially because all the other writing used is black.                                                                                                       

   Diane Kruger is on the front cover in what I believe to be an invitational pose, she is wearing a gold sequin dress which ties in very well with the banner, she has her arm up through the S of instyle almost like she is attached to it I really like the cover layout and again it is uncluttered, clean and attractive to the eye, and I will use some of the ideas in my work.

Reveal

Reveal is very different from Marie Clare and instyle. The front cover is very bright bold and busy. I like how the price is big and very easy to see, because on the other two magazines the price has been extremely small and almost like a challenge to find. I would like to make the price big on my magazine. The pictures on this cover not poses at all and look like paparazzi photos and the main reason that I would buy this magazine would be for the stories on the cover. The main sell line is boxed in aluminous yellow which is very eye-catching and along with the picture draws the audience in especially if you are a Jessie Wallace or Lauren Goodger fan. I also like the fact that the V in Reveal is very big on one side and divides story lines it also looks very much like a tick which could possibly represent the magazine being good quality.

More

More is very bright like reveal but has one side full of clothes and autumn fashion with very affordable prices on the front, the other is full of  current celebrities and story’s that are in the magazine. . The photo of Kelly and Beyonce while very effective look more paparazzi like reveal but the star also looks like they are doing a super smiler pose.                                            I like the fact that you get the impression that the magazine has lots of story’s inside. I also like how the masthead which says more is two different colours half white half red, I  would like to incorporate the little photo size images on the front cove into my work because I think that they mean if you don’t like the sound of the story the image might make you change your mind.
